His poetry received much appreciation for his depictions of the rural life of New England, his command of American colloquial speech, and his realistic verse portraying ordinary people in everyday situations. He was honoured frequently during his lifetime and is the only poet to receive four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry. He passed away peacefully in 1963.
