Mary Elizabeth O'Brien is Professor Emeritus of Nursing at The Catholic University of America. Description: Based on the underlying tenet that a true leader must be a servant of those he or she leads, this book describes the philosophy of servant leadership and how it can be applied to nursing and nursing leadership. It includes extensive material on leadership in general and chronicles the history of nursing leaders as well as present day nursing leaders. Based on interviews with 75 contemporary nursing leaders, the book presents a model of servant leadership.
Purpose: The purpose is to explore the philosophy of servant leadership and share it with nurses as a potential leadership style for contemporary nursing.
Audience: This book is for all nurses, but most specifically for nurses and nursing students who embrace Christianity. Healthcare executives and board members also could read it to gain a better understanding of nursing's calling.
Features: This book provides extensive information and research on servant leadership; information on servant leaders of the early Christian era, the middle ages, and post reformation; the biblical roots of nurses' call to service; and the results of a phenomenological study of 75 contemporary nurses titled "Called to Serve."
