The statistics are staggering: nearly 27 million people worldwide are currently victims of human trafficking, most frequently girls between the ages of 12 and 14. This is the first clinical guide to assessing and treating victims of sex trafficking, encompassing best practices and strategies for overcoming the severe barriers that this group presents. These barriers most notably include separating victims from their pimps/handlers who exert tight control over their lives, speech, and interactions with healthcare providers.

At the heart of the book are consistently organized chapters addressing the major injuries, diseases and psychological traumas for which trafficked victims are likely to seek treatment. Description: This is a handy toolkit for nursing interventions for victims of sex trafficking. It is a valuable resource for nurses who need information about sex trafficking and its clinical consequences.
Purpose: According to the editor, this book is designed to raise awareness and provide helpful information to nurses with the hope they can more comprehensively care for this particular vulnerable population, a worthy objective.
Audience: Although written for emergency room nurses, the book is appropriate as an education reference for any nurse or nurse practitioner.
Features: The best part of the book is found in the appendixes, which include a policy, procedure, and protocol template for emergency departments on human trafficking; patient referral guidelines; an example of tertiary screening and interviewing; and a curriculum plan for staff development on human trafficking. The book covers the history of sex trafficking; community resources models that work well, and illnesses or diseases these victims may present to the emergency department with — pregnancy, STDs, physical trauma, and malnutrition, to name a few. It also comes with credible case studies. It is a comprehensive resource.
Assessment: This is a valuable resource for emergency departments everywhere! It is the gold standard for information about this topic.
