Description: This book reviews theory, assessment, and treatment of sexual perversions for mental health professionals.
Purpose: The purpose is to inform mental health professionals of all of the considerations (clinical, cultural, moral, ethical, legal, and political) that need to go into assessing and treating a patient with sexual perversion. Other books have covered this topic in a similar manner, but recent clinical research and recent social and political changes make this up-to-date book useful.
Audience: The authors are targeting general psychotherapists as their audience. The text is written at a level that may be difficult for trainees or students to understand, except those at senior graduate (doctoral) level.
Features: There are no graphs, tables, or illustrations. The format and typeface are readable and appropriate for books in this area. The index and table of contents are adequate, although the chapter "Prevalence of Sexual Perversion" should be more accurately titled "Prevalence and Aftereffects of Child Sexual Abuse" in order to reflect its content.
Assessment: This book is well written in understandable language for its target audience. One chapter contains some excellent clinical case examples. However, the book leaves several important content areas covered inadequately, including biological treatments for perversions, information on paraphilia diagnosis and treatment in adolescents, treatment outcome research, and the importance of sociopathy in affecting assessment and treatment planning. Therefore, the book is a well-written but noncomprehensive overview of clinical theory and applications in the field of sexual perversion.
