About the Author

Chief John J. Mandeville is a retired, 34 year FDNY Fire Chief, who has written 7 books, starting when he reached his 70's -- now 82 years of age. Some call him the Grandpa Moses of Literature. Some call him something else. The old chief lives in Farmingdale, Long Island, NY. He has two children and 4 grandkids. Most of his writing entails firefighting and crime (his son is a NYPD sergeant--poor misguided boy). His daughter choose a better profession: Mobil Vet Ultrasound Operator.
The old chief enjoys softball, hiking, nature (two trips to the Galapagos Is.), bird watching, girl watching, reading, and playing poker with the grandkids. They always win.
Recently, after being hounded, I joined the coop board in my place of residence. It is a great experience for me, but I can't think why they would want me on the board. My days of "running things" are over. I just want to sit back and watch. But I can see why a board of mostly women want an old fire chief to join them. At the annual meeting I met up with a resident wise ass who I had to verbally put inhis place. About 20 years ago I would probably handle it differently. Check out the book "The Chief" by Wesley Williams, the first Black Fire Officer in the FDNY. Back then disputes were settled in the firehouse cellar.
