Overview

At the Sixth Wiggers Bernard Conference, a group of scientists from various disciplines discussed new findings relating to nitric oxide synthase inhibitor in shock, sepsis, and organ failure. Dedicated to the presentation and discussion of both positive and negative findings related to the use of NOS inhibitors, the meeting served as a forum for issues relating to specific and non-specific inhibitors, as well as the role of nitric oxide-oxygen radical interactions. Both experimental and clinical data were presented in the trauma and sepsis field.

This is a monograph of the edited proceedings and discussion of papers presented at the Sixth Wiggers Bernard Shock Conference. This is a focused review of one of the hot areas in shock research, manipulation of nitric oxide availability in shock. Shock researchers, particularly students of nitric oxide utilization in the setting of shock and resuscitation, will benefit from this monograph. Editors and contributors represent an international group of authorities on this subject. Thirteen presentations with associated discussion are included in the 300 pages of this monograph. Chapters include black-and-white figures and line drawings which reproduce well. Each presentation includes an overview of developments leading up to the topic discussed. The list of references provided with each presentation is extensive. References date to within one to two years of publication for the monograph. No index is provided. Strategies for control of nitric oxide production and nitric oxide scavenging agents are well described. Among the techniques reviewed are use of hemoglobins as nitric oxide scavengers, nitric oxide synthase inhibitors, the relationship of nitric oxide to leukocyte adhesion and microvascular injury, and cytokine control of nitric oxide production. This book shares many of the typical weaknesses of monographs describing proceedings from academic meetings. The presentations tend to be redundant and discussion is sometimes without focus. Nonetheless, for quality of presentation, clarity of figures and tables, and comprehensiveness of reviews and reference lists provided, this monograph, which has been nicely focused, can be warmly recommended.
