Description: This handbook on blood gas analysis is presented in typically spare, understandable British style, and is amply illustrated.
Purpose: The goals, as articulated by the authors, include providing an understanding of how the body regulates acid base disturbances; reviewing relevant respiratory physiology; and introducing a framework for the interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs). There is a need for this book since this material is often presented at a more complex level in other texts without the myriad clinical case studies providedhere. Creative, albeit at times crude, illustrations of complex concepts are helpful. The objectives of the authors are achieved since the information is presented in a straightforward manner with helpful examples.
Audience: The intended audience for this handbook is medical students, house staff, and nurses. As presented, the material should be readily understood by the intended audience. The authors are attending physicians in emergency medicine and anesthesiology. Ample clinical experience is reflected in the case studies.
Features: Illustrations are liberally and creatively employed in this text. Although not all of high quality, they are adequate to demonstrate their intended points. References are not listed, which may be acceptable for a handbook. This text is well laid out and easy to follow. A unique feature is the liberal use of boxes containing key points specific to major sections of each chapter. These key points help focus the reader and provide quick references. Numerous study questions help test the retention of knowledge presented in each chapter.
Assessment: This is a high quality, clinically relevant handbook. It should be useful to any clinician learning, reviewing, or teaching the analysis and interpretation of ABGs.
