Overview

A routine visit to Nan's physician triggered a wave of introspection about choices available for women (and men, potentially) who are single at 70. This quick-to-read "treatise" addresses aging in place, pros and cons of living in a retirement community, liabilities of caregiving for and from a loved one, liabilities of caregiving for and from an adult child, and the current status of assisted dying in the U.S. and abroad.
Brenda writes in a conversational style, bantering with Nan about insights gained from personal stories of aging friends and family while adding new insights gained from her research on aging's journey.

About the Author

Brenda Chafin Seal, Ph.D., is Professor Emerita in
Communication Sciences and Disorders at James Madison
University (1981-2009), and a retired Professor and Director of Speech-Language Pathology at Gallaudet University
(2009-2019). Brenda’s early career as a teacher of deaf children and as a speech-language pathologist at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind (1973-1981) led to national certification as a sign language interpreter (1975-2015). Brenda grew up in
Castlewood in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia. She lives in Bridgewater in the Shenandoah Valley, with her cat, Polly,
among wonderful neighbors and friends. Brenda is single.
