About the Author

George A. W. Bruyn, MD, PhD

After attending medical school in Brussels, Dr. Bruyn did his residency at University Hospital Leiden and rheumatology fellowship at University Hospital Utrecht. He was a consultant rheumatologist at the Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden in the Netherlands as well as at the Antoniusziekenhuis from 1989 to 2009. From 2009 to 2019, he was a rheumatologist and the chair of the rheumatology department at MC Groep Hospitals in Lelystad, the Netherlands. In 2019, he took on the role of director of the Rheumatology Clinics Lelystad . Between 2014 and 2020, he acted as  the co-chair  of the OMERACT Working Group on Ultrasonography and mentored the subgroup on Sjögren’s syndrome. In 1991, he co-founded the Dutch Working Group on Ultrasonography and is a founding member of the Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography Study Group of the American College of Rheumatologyin 1999. In addition, Dr Bruyn serves as a medical expert at the Dutch Court of Appeal in labour law issues.

Description: This book presents a brief review of Sjogren syndrome with special emphasis on ultrasonography of the salivary glands.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to introduce the role of ultrasonography of the salivary glands and its importance in the diagnosis of Sjogren syndrome.
Audience: The primary target audience is clinicians and researchers who work and dedicate their time to the care of those with Sjogren syndrome. However, rheumatologists and clinical immunologists will also find this book a resourceful reference.
Features: This is a large softcover book of approximately 170 pages. It is divided into 14 chapters. The first seven chapters cover introduction, epidemiology, clinical presentation, classification, and pathogenesis. One chapter covers juvenile Sjogren syndrome, and the remaining chapters focus mainly on anatomy, ultrasonography, and biopsy of the salivary glands. As far as format, the chapters are presented in a logical sequence. There are sufficient images, especially in the second part of the book. I found the introductory chapter, "A Tribute to Henrik Sjogren," an informative introduction for those who study this chronic autoimmune condition. Although treatment and management are part of the book's subtitle, the book does not cover these subjects except for a couple of paragraphs in the juvenile Sjogren syndrome chapter.
Assessment: This multi-authored book gives a concise review of Sjogren syndrome and introduces ultrasonography of the salivary glands as a unique tool for diagnosis of this clinical syndrome. As this area of immunology is subspecialized and resources are limited, this book adds another teaching reference for those who care for such patients.
