Description: This is a radiographic atlas of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of the human body. It is organized by anatomical region and presents hundreds of radiographs of conditions affecting each region of the body. As an atlas, the emphasis is on the radiographs rather than on extensive text. The previous edition was published nine years earlier, so updating it was essential in light of new information.
Purpose: The purpose is to illustrate the imaging diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders and to update the earlier version of the book to include recent advances in these diagnoses. The emphasis is on illustrations the authors believe represent the most characteristic presentation of disease entities. A new edition was overdue, and this book is a major contribution to the literature.
Audience: The authors note that the book is directed at radiologists, chiropractors, and other clinicians who routinely interpret images of the musculoskeletal system. In addition, radiology residents, chiropractic students, and clinicians in training would benefit by having this book for classroom use and for preparation for board or certification examinations. Dr. Resnick is a prominent medical radiologist, Dr. Taylor is a leading chiropractic radiologist, and Dr. Hughes is a leading radiological educator.
Features: Essentially, this is a region-by-region examination of the radiology of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system. Each chapter provides a brief overview of normal developmental anatomy, anomalies, and variants, and then depicts a full presentation of pathological conditions affecting that region of the body. The full range of conditions are covered, including dysplasias, injuries, internal joint derangements, tumors, metabolic disorders, hematologic disorders, and so on. A great deal of information is presented in tabular format, making it easy to locate needed material, and there are literally thousands of illustrations. Each condition is referenced to past literature. Various forms of imaging are included, from plain film to advanced imaging modalities. At well over 1,000 pages, the book is extremely thorough.
Assessment: This is an excellent update of a previously well received book, and it will find use across the wide range of practices that use radiology. It is not designed to provide in-depth information on all conditions, but instead to illustrate the radiological appearance of conditions to help in diagnosis and training. It is a truly worthy addition to the literature on radiological diagnosis. I heartily recommend it.
