About the Author

Isabel Thomas studied Human Sciences at Oxford University before working in the wonderful world of children's publishing. She has written dozens of books for children and teenagers, and is a trained literacy tutor. Isabel lives in Cambridge, UK, with her husband and three rambunctious sons.

Rick Peterson uses both traditional and digital media to create images for a wide range of publishing, advertising and editorial projects - including a long list of children's titles. His work has received awards from Graphic Design USA and the Association of Educational Publishers. Rick lives in Minneapolis with his wife, two children, a cat, a gerbil, and a lovable but barky dog.

Gr 1–4—These simple guides to pet care cover feeding, cleaning, housing, handling, and grooming, as well as vacation and health care. Written from the pet's perspective, the books lead readers through the pet ownership process, offering guidance through sentences that often begin with "Don't forget…" and "Before you…." Positive features are balanced with concerns about care and behavior. A cautionary note on the many responsibilities that come with pet ownership is included. Animal shelters and rescue centers are recommended in the "Choosing Your (Animal name here)" chapter. Illustrations are a combination of lighthearted, if lackluster, cartoon artwork and include footprints of the pet in question that lead kids from page to page and photos with somewhat jarring pieces of masking tape superimposed along their edges. Lists of facts and tips conclude each book. Useful and child-friendly introductions to pet ownership.
