Description: This third edition of an atlas of small animal dermatology comes five years after the previous edition and adds a new chapter on avian and exotic animal dermatology, many new illustrations, and an "Author's Notes" feature that reflects the author's opinions on various aspects of the diagnosis and management of dermatological disorders.
Purpose: It is designed as a practical color atlas and companion to Muller and Kirk's Small Animal Dermatology, 6th edition, Scott et al. (Elsevier, 2001). It is also intended as an easy-to-use reference with current treatments for each disorder. These are worthy objectives, but this quick-reference format results in the omission of important information such as cautions regarding drug interactions and monitoring for side effects.
Audience: This book is primarily intended for practicing small animal veterinarians. Veterinary students also will appreciate the excellent photographs depicted in this book and the diagnostic algorithms.
Features: Two introductory chapters provide overviews of differential diagnoses for common presenting clinical signs and of diagnostic techniques useful in the evaluation of patients with dermatological disorders. Subsequent chapters provide succinct information on the features, top differentials, most important diagnostic tools, treatment, and prognosis of the dermatological diseases most likely to be seen by practitioners. Several examples illustrate the clinical appearance of lesions associated with each disease.
Assessment: The abundant new color images and the addition of a chapter on common dermatological disorders affecting birds, reptiles, and small mammals justify the purchase of this third edition. While it should not be the sole reference used for evaluating patients with dermatological diseases, it is an excellent resource for small animal veterinarians. Users should consult pharmacology references or more detailed dermatology books prior to prescribing any drug they have not used on a regular basis.
