Overview

Snaxxx continues Mndsgn's series of short, informal releases that play like beat tapes, generally consisting of brief tracks flowing into each other. This one is a bit more song-based and feels closer to a proper album, however. The chomping cartoon sound effects and playful grooves announce this as something to lounge to, preferably with a bag of munchies. The release flows from slippery boom-bap to the slow jam "Finallyalone," which augments a wide-eyed looped sample with creamy backing vocals. Songs with Devin Morrison and Anna Wise bring the vocals closer to the foreground, though Mndsgn's own romantic thoughts are heard on most of these soft, pillowy tracks. Moments like "LUV MIRAGE" and the end of "Particular Flowr" especially draw from smooth jazz and quiet storm, though nearly the entire record inhabits a realm of light, dreamy funk. Liv.e pops up for two cuts near the end, the enticing "(my)PLEASURE" and the more conflicted "Playinthesegames." A brief, nearly whispered interlude rendition of "Walk on By" precedes the hushed, lullaby-like conclusion "SNT." Snaxxx starts off hot and steamy but soon ends up soft and cuddly, sending the listener off into a night of sweet dreams. ~ Paul Simpson
