Charles is a wealthy, older, railroad magnate who has a son from a former marriage; he also has a mistress and little desire to get married again. Amy, barely out of the schoolroom herself, fights falling in love with such a difficult man and their unusual courtship results in more problems, not fewer. "I am your husband," storms Charles. "So you say," Amy replies coolly. She pursues him to California; he is ready to pursue her to France. Amy knows that if she can just talk Charles into giving her a chance, giving them a chance . . . in this post Civil War adventure, romance seems just out of reach. Or so it seems.
