Description: This book is structured as a working manual for the treatment of adjustment disorders as defined in the DSM-IV. It is the third volume in Brunner/Mazel Mental Health Practice Under Managed Care series.
Purpose: The purpose is to enable mental health professionals to demonstrate specific, proven-effective treatment strategies that are appropriate for those diagnosed with adjustment disorder and within a specific time frame, as required by managed care and insurance companies. This type of book is needed in the field, but the title is misleading.
Audience: The book is written for mental health professionals and students in training.
Features: There are some sample forms that clinicians may find useful to use in their practice. There are very few references pertaining specifically to solution-focused therapy.
Assessment: The purpose behind the Brunner/Mazel Managed Care Series is to address the major developments and changes resulting from the introduction of managed care, which I think can be helpful to clinicians. In this particular volume, the authors have suggested many treatment interventions that may be appropriate and useful for clinicians working with those people diagnosed with adjustment disorders. However, the authors make only minimal reference to solution-focused brief therapy theory or principles, which is puzzling, given the title of this book. Instead, their approach is much more grounded in cognitive-behavioral and rational emotive behavioral theory and practice. This is by no means a criticism, as these strategies can be very helpful to people. Yet for those readers wanting to learn how to apply solution-focused therapy for people with adjustment disorders, this approach is represented only minimally in this book.
