The third volume of a five-volume set contains entries for some 200 sites from the Iberian Penninsula to Turkey, selected for their significance to political, military, architectural, artistic, religious, or social history. The entry for each site includes a detailed essay explaining the events that occurred there and their historical significance, and also providing information on what the site offers to contemporary visitors. Headnotes give the site's geographic location, a concise description, and the address of a central contact for the area. Each essay also includes a brief bibliographical essay providing recommendations for further reading.
