Sown on Rock: The Sermon on the Vernacular and the Correspondence with Hedio
If any single sermon embodies the reformation of preaching, this is it. Rarely has a simple, straightforward sermon caused such a stir or been so widely circulated so fast. At once a long-deferred return to patristic exposition in the style of Chrysostom and the ancestor of evangelical preaching at its best, Oecolampadius' Sermon on the Vernacular is here translated into English for the first time, with all of his 1522 correspondence, including "A Beautiful Letter" to Caspar Hedio, with which the sermon first appeared in print 500 years ago, as well as his initial exchange of letters with Zwingli, several dedications attached to his early translations, and more. A generous supplement includes two accounts of the period from 19th c. biographers and Ernst Staehelin's comprehensive 1916 essay on the Reformer's translations of the church fathers.
