Description: Covering all aspects of spine-related care, this book provides detailed background on the scope of spine pain in the U.S. and scientific background on the spine before delving into diagnosis and treatment of a variety of spine conditions.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a multidisciplinary integrated compendium about the spine and spine-related disorders. This is a worthy objective and the book is useful for practitioners in pain medicine, fulfilling its intended objectives.
Audience: The author does not state the intended audience, but the book would be most useful for residents and fellows during pain medicine rotation and for nonsurgical interventional spine specialists. It may be used as a reference by practicing interventional or noninterventional pain physicians, physical therapists, and others in healthcare with a particular interest in the spine. The book meets the needs of this audience. The author is a well-known authority in the field of anesthesia and pain management who has done extensive research in the field. He has an extensive list of publications and is involved in an academic department and division.
Features: The focus of this book is on nonsurgical spine care, which is particularly useful for pain management physicians or nonsurgical spine specialists. However, this is not explicitly stated. One area that falls glaringly short is the coverage of surgical spine procedures, which are discussed in two brief chapters that span 20 pages and even have some overlap. The book covers many topics, some of which are esoteric; for example, the use of ultrasound for medial branch injections is uncommon. Some chapters are extremely helpful, such as radiology of the spine and neurophysiologic (EMG) evaluation of the spine. There are many images in the book, which is quite useful. Unfortunately, not all of them are of high quality, requiring a higher resolution to prevent blurriness.
Assessment: This book often does not go into enough depth about a specific topic, but it serves as a quick reference on a variety of topics. The section on transforaminal epidural steroid injection or lumbar sympathetic block fails to provide sufficient detail to complete the procedure. Atlas of Image-Guided Spinal Procedures, 2nd edition, Furman et al. (Elsevier, 2018), as well as the Spine Interventions Society (SIS) Practice Guidelines provide greater detail. Although similar to Essentials of Pain Medicine, 4th edition, Benzon et al. (Elsevier, 2018), this book provides a greater focus on the spine.
