Overview

There is that of God in everyone. As we reach out to God, we find other people. As we reach out to others, we reach out to God. When we are most fully alive, most real, we discover life in others and help to make God real to them. Spirituality is about relationships and about depth.

It is about self, the other person, and the world around. It is about that which is beyond or within all people which confers meaning to reality, and gives purpose and shape to life. This we may call God or the Spirit. So in one sense or another it involves reaching out and being reached out to.

In my search for reality, for authenticity, for the God who is always present, I have been both guest and host. My spiritual journey began in the Jewish world, has led me through the lowlands of doubt and isolation, and through the forests of agnosticism and atheism. I have also visited the pastures of Zen. At each place I have made discoveries and from each of these places I have carried away insights which make me the person that I am.

The pamphlet Spiritual Hospitality arises from two talks given by Harvey Gillman in 1993: Pendle Hill (March) and Swarthmore Meeting (November) and from many years reflecting on spirituality, counseling, and how human beings strive to communicate with each other.
