Description: Many important issues of physical and psychological development of the child, pre-adolescent, and adolescent participating in sports are addressed in this book. Common sports injuries and their prevention are explored as well.
Purpose: The aim is to educate parents and coaches about illnesses and injuries commonly affecting young athletes in sports. The treatment and prevention of these injuries is discussed, and often misunderstood developmental psychological issues are incorporated into the spectrum encompassing healthy participation and injury. The intent is to provide a reference for the above issues, but this is not a complete encyclopedic text. The clearly stated objectives are met in an efficient and obvious manner.
Audience: The intended audience includes the parents and coaches of young athletes ranging in age from preschool to 15 years.
Features: The text is divided into five major sections. Issues such as preparation for sport, physical conditioning, injury recognition and treatment, and proper equipment are discussed. The editor emphasizes key points throughout the book by using boldfaced and highlighted print purposefully set off from the main text.
