This installment of the Star Trek franchise has the usual elements. An excellent reader, in this case David Kaye, captures the cadence and tone of the well-known characters. Sound effects throughout do more than words in getting a Star Trek fan into the setting. Familiar music tastefully adds to the story. In this one, James T. Kirk is an instructor at Starfleet Academy. He agrees to assist in the founding of a new colony, and the adventure begins. Spock, Scotty, McCoy--the beloved characters are here, but the story overall lacks originality.
