Things haven't been easy for Kate Blessing. Her mom has moved out and her father's business is falling apart. Then, while on a fact-finding mission for her dad, she has a magical night with Nick Blattaria. The Blattarias and Blessings are rival organized-crime families vying for the same territory. While Kate's father, the boss of the Blessing syndicate, is fending off members of his own family, he turns to Kate for both solace and advice on how to operate the business. In order to forget Nick, she takes her mother's advice, given to her over their cocktail lunch in between Kate's high school classes, to use incredibly handsome and rich Teddy Fitzgerald as a diversion. Meanwhile, Kate's best friend's sexual escapades end up on the Internet. The friend takes it in stride, figuring Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton made it big the same way. Throw in the FBI, a mole in the organization, an impending mob war, and sex and you have an HBO drama in the making. Unfortunately, the novel falls short. Kate and her friends are shallow, and it is hard to believe that a hardened crime boss would value the opinion of a high school junior.
