About the Author

R.F. Brissenden (1928-1991) was Reader in English at the Australian National University. He published a number of articles and monographs in the field of eighteenth-century studies, including Virtue in Distress: Studies in the Novel of Sentiment from Richardson to Sade and also wrote on Australian and American literature. J.C. Eade is Professor in Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures at the Australian National University. He is the editor of a Bibliographical Essay on Eighteenth-Century Studies in Australia.
