Description: This book is structured to provide a reference for specific topics related to the identification and treatment of alcohol and drug problems.
Purpose: The purpose is to disseminate accurate information to a broad readership about drug and alcohol problems. I doubt whether the authors' objective can be met as there is already a multitude of books available on this subject. However, the information is accurate.
Audience: In theory, this book could be used by professionals, paraprofessionals, and interested lay public.
Features: The style of writing and the formatting are nicely done. There is also a very readable summary of the neurobiology of addiction.
Assessment: The authors comment in the preface that the treatment of addiction is in a precarious state, in part due to the current reimbursement mechanisms for services within managed care. We have enough literature about diagnosis and treatment models. What clinicians and the general community need are strategies for successful political advocacy and reshaping of public policy.
