Overview

This book highlights the current epidemiology of suicide among children and adolescents, as well as identifying important risk factors and evidence-based treatment options. To accomplish this, this book is organized into two major sections: (1) contributing factors to the emergence of child and adolescent suicide, and (2) evidence-based treatment of child and adolescent suicide.

Across studies, researchers discuss risk factors of anxiety, sleep problems, child sexual abuse, and violence perpetration, and conclude with treatment considerations including the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) and safety planning. From this body of work, it is clear that there is an urgent need to better understand and effectively treat child and adolescent suicide. The book will be a great resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of Psychology, Psychiatry, Medicine, Sociology, Social Work and Youth Studies.

The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Children's Health Care.

About the Author

Michelle A. Patriquin, PhD, ABPP, is Director of Research at The Menninger Clinic and is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine. She is board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) in clinical child and adolescent psychology.

Katrina A. Rufino, PhD, is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Houston–Downtown in the Department of Social Sciences. She is also a senior data scientist and the principal investigator for suicide-related projects at the Menninger Clinic.

Description: This book discusses the underlying factors of suicidal behavior in children and adolescents. It looks at various risk factors, treatment intervention, and safety planning. This material was originally part of an issue of Children's Health Care.
Purpose: According to the preface, "This book highlights the current epidemiology of suicide among children and adolescents, as well as [identifies] important risk factors and evidence-based treatment options" (p. i). These are very worthy objectives, which the book meets.
Audience: According to the preface, "the book will be a great resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of Psychology, Psychiatry, Medicine, Sociology, Social Work, and Youth Studies" (p. i). I agree with the target audience described. The book meets the needs of its intended audience. The editors are credible authorities in the subject matter of the book. The contributing authors are affiliated with well-known institutions of higher learning and/or medical centers.
Features: The book begins with an introduction to the topic. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the second leading cause of death for children from ages 10-17 is suicide. This rate has increased in the past 10 years. Anxiety is a significant risk factor for suicide, though only about one-third of those suffering from it receive treatment. Also, when sleep disturbance is present with anxiety symptoms, the risk for suicidal ideations increases dramatically. Research has shown that family/friend support for childhood victims of abuse may help reduce the risk of suicidal ideations in adulthood. Youth who were exposed to violence and/or perpetrated violence are more likely to engage in suicidal behavior. Safety planning is an important component of addressing suicidal risk. It can reduce inpatient hospitalizations and the risk of suicide attempts. The Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) emphasizes honesty, empathy, collaboration, and suicide-focus. This treatment modality has been shown to be effective with adults, but may be adapted for use with adolescents and children. The book is very readable and contains helpful tables/figures, which help clarify the text.
Assessment: This volume is excellent because it provides valuable information for clinicians and researchers who are involved with children and adolescents. The book provides research findings that can help reduce suicidal behavior in this population, which is the group's second leading cause of death. Readers will not be disappointed.
