About the Author

David A. DeBonis, PhD, CCC-A is a professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY and a member of the audiology staff at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital in Schenectady, New York. He has a master’s degree in ­audiology from The Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA and a PhD degree in educational psychology from the State University of New York at Albany. David has over 30 years of clinical experience and 25 years of college teaching experience. He has co-authored and authored articles in several journals, including the American Journal of Audiology and the International Journal of Audiology. In 2014, he was awarded the Thomas Manion Outstanding Faculty Award at The College of Saint Rose.

Constance L. Donohue, AuD, CCC-A is an audiologist and an adjunct faculty member at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. Her experience includes nearly 20 years of teaching in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Program at the college. Connie received a master’s degree in audiology and hearing impairment from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and a Doctor of Audiology degree from A. T. Still University of Health Sciences, Arizona School of Health Sciences in Mesa in 2013. Since 1998, Connie has worked in state government, including 15 years at the New York State Department of Health, where she helped establish and implement statewide newborn hearing screening. She currently serves as director of the Bureau of Early Intervention and oversees the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program.

Description: This is the third edition of the most readable, informative introduction to audiology for audiologists and speech-language pathologists.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce audiology to beginning students at the undergraduate speech-language pathology level. Because of its readability and coverage, the book does an excellent job. For over 10 years, this has been my go-to for the introduction to audiology class I teach and the previous edition, by another publisher, was unavailable last year. It was difficult to replace. This third edition, now published by Slack, is a great contribution to the field of communication disorders.
Audience: This book is suitable for undergraduate audiology and speech-language pathology students learning about audiology. It is a perfect book for this audience due to the ease of reading and the appropriate coverage of the topic for their level of understanding. The authors, professors of students at this level, know their audience and it shows.
Features: One of the best aspects of this book is the way it covers the subject. When teaching an introduction to audiology course, following this book is ideal. Another great aspect is its readability. Surprisingly, my students comment on how much they enjoy reading this book and, consequently, how much they learn. The organization of the material is intuitive and well thought out.
Assessment: This is a choice resource for educating undergraduate students in audiology. It is a must have for communication disorders programs' audiology courses. I have taught this course for 24 years and I have perused all of the books on this topic - I am thrilled this book is now published by Slack. This edition been updated with new information on auditory processing disorder, misophonia, and over-the-counter hearing aids. It does not cover aural rehabilitation enough to be used for that course, but it was a good decision to just have one chapter on this topic to keep the appropriate focus on an introduction to audiology.
