Sweet Temptation

This swoonworthy, romantic companion novel to Wendy Higgins's New York Times bestselling Sweet Evil series is told from irresistible bad-boy Kaidan's point of view. Readers will love getting inside Kaidan's head, especially fans of the Divergent series by Veronica Roth, the Selection series by Kiera Cass, and Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire.

When bad-boy drummer Kaidan Rowe encounters good girl Anna Whitt, the girl chosen to vanquish the demons from earth, he can't stop thinking about her. The Nephilim son of the Duke of Lust, Kaidan tries to help Anna embrace a life of sin, but she gradually helps him see that he's meant to do more with his life. Their relationship is as tortured as it is passionate, for Nephilim are forbidden to fall in love. But as hard as they may try to obey, Kai can't seem to stay away from Anna, nor Anna from Kai.

Full of chemistry and high-stakes drama, this companion book is darker, hotter, and completely satisfying.

Gr 9 Up—The author returns to the world of angels and demons in this companion to the "Sweet Evil" trilogy (HarperCollins), this time from the point of view of bad boy Nephilim Kaidan Rowe. Kai is a drummer in a band, but because he is the son of the Duke of Lust, his real job is to seduce girls and women, thus helping the demons get a hold on the human world. Anna is also a Neph, although she doesn't know it at first. She radiates goodness and light and is everything Kai is not. They fall in love, and their relationship could ultimately save all the Nephilim from the Dukes and offer them a chance at redemption, but is it worth the risk? In an author's note, Higgins writes that this title is not meant to be read as a stand-alone work. Recounting the action of the original three volumes in this title makes for some dizzying jumps in time and plot. It's not uncommon for months, or even years, to pass between one chapter and the next, which can be disconcerting at best. Kai's "work" means that there is lots of sex in this novel. There is sex slavery (including that of a child) and a subplot involving a prostitution ring, and rape is threatened on more than one occasion. The dark far outweighs the light in this paranormal romance. VERDICT Skip it unless there's an incredibly devoted fanbase for the original trilogy or a large budget for titles in this genre.—Heather Webb, Worthington Libraries, OH
