Overview

Although the programming of this LP is (in Folkways' tradition) pretty random, most of the selections are somewhat rare. Of particular interest are a couple of jazz-oriented Paul Whiteman items from 1935 and performances by Phil Harris's Orchestra, Gene Kardos, Ray McKinley, Bobby Byrne, Phil Napoleon (the only selection from the 1920s), The Hudson-Delange Orchestra and Frank Tanner. While the performances of Pete Brown and Gene Krupa are a bit familiar (and one would prefer to get these swinging recordings in more coherent form), this LP should be sought after by swing collectors. ~ Scott Yanow
