Description: This is a useful how-to guide to the provision of total intravenous anesthesia. The book describes the technique along with its indications and concerns on a basic level.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce readers to the technique of total intravenous anesthesia.
Audience: The book is intended for individuals with little or no knowledge of total intravenous anesthesia. The book applies mainly to anesthesia providers as the technique is an anesthetic; however, critical care physicians may find portions of the book helpful for sedation in the intensive care unit.
Features: The book is well organized and presents the topics in a basic, easy-to-understand manner. It begins with the pharmacology of total intravenous anesthesia, followed by a discussion of the technique and its performance. The remaining sections present indications for total intravenous anesthesia in clinical practice, as well as concerns. The greatest concern with this anesthetic method is patient awareness. The book thoroughly describes depth of anesthesia monitoring in a clear and useful fashion.
Assessment: This book is useful for anesthesia providers with limited or no knowledge of total intravenous anesthesia. Readers with some knowledge, or even individuals with no knowledge, may find the writing style too basic for a medical textbook. There are no other titles that present total intravenous anesthesia on its own; rather, the technique is usually discussed in a single chapter of major anesthesia textbooks.
