Friends who help them in their quest include Phillip Fox, Dean Deer, Mother Tree, Oliver Owl, and Bernie Bear. After facing predators, rain, and even fire, Junah realizes that the secret that is revealed is not only about the forest but about himself.

About the Author

M. R. Neer (aka Michael Roy) has enjoyed a long career of organizing words in creative ways as an English teacher, curriculum specialist, magazine publisher, book editor, and long-time teacher of the Transcendental Meditation technique. He has won awards for his novels, for journalism, for newsletter writing, and for teaching, and makes his home in Fresno, California. He writes fables, fairy tales, and legends about the quest for the secrets of life. He believes that deep human values are universal and can be awakened through stories.

Gwenna Merriman has an MA in Scenic Design from California State University Fresno and a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Boise State University. She was the Production Supervisor for the CSUF Theatre Arts Department for 20 plus years. she has at various times been an art teacher, sign painter, muralist, and a Summer Theatre Arts technician in lighting, scenic painting, and props. She has illustrated several books including Tales of Junah Cat by M.R. Neer, which won a Silver Medal in the 2018 Readers' Favorite Award Contest. She is presently retired but has adopted book illustration as a means to occupy her muse.

M.R. Neer's Middle-Grade novel, Tales of Junah Cat, Book 2: Secret of the Forest, continues on Junah's prophetic journeys, which are more like quests of discovery. Every time Junah learns something new, he shares a purr. Like "Learning is remembering." And another one about growing, a purr with many meanings: "We grow by stretching to more and more." As the cat and his friends journey deep into the forest, meeting one challenge after another, they learn together and grow stronger together. Complete with black-and-white drawings to heighten the building tension and the very prophetic purrs of wisdom, this story will certainly both entertain and inspire young readers as they follow Junah's quest.

I am grateful to M. R. Neer for this work because there is so much wisdom in many passages and sentences that I confess I often paused while reading. Meditating on a children's book is something that has never happened to me, yet it was necessary because of the depth and value it contains. Junah Cat's journey into the forest is an excellent opportunity to explain concepts that help kids live a fulfilled and happy life. I encourage parents to discuss Tales of Junah Cat with their children and to read it more than once.

I read this book with my eight-year-old son; actually, he read it to me, and there are many things he loved about this fun book. He understands that friends are important in every quest and that teamwork matters. Tales of Junah Cat is a great achievement and is filled with adventure and many things that children look for in a good book.

I found myself swept up in their adventures and enjoyed discovering the lessons and insights that Junah Cat gained on the way. Tales of Junah Cat: Secret of the Forest is not only an accessible chapter book for kids to read independently but would make an excellent read-aloud for younger children as well. Kids will be so excited to hear the continuing adventures of Junah and his companions that they will beg you to keep reading. They will also try to figure out the secret of the forest along with Junah.
