This book considers how and why these changes took place, and some of the consequences which have flowed from them.

About the Author

ROY DOUGLAS is Emeritus Reader at the University of Surrey. He is author of a number of historical books, including The History of the Liberal Party, 1895-1970 and Land, People and Politics: A History of the Land Question in the United Kingdom, 1878-1952; several books on 20th century diplomatic history, and on international history studied through the medium of cartoons.

Growth of taxation in Britain through the past 4 centuries has not been regular. For much of the time, taxation rose continuously, but for a large part of the 19th century taxes actually declined. Wars resulted in taxation increases, and when wars were finished, taxation never settled to previous levels. Seeks to understand and explain reasons for these changing patterns in taxation in Britain from the Restoration through WWII, postwar taxation, and the Thatcher era.
