Overview

Violinist Ellinor D'Melon was in her early twenties when this recording appeared on the Rubicon Classics label in early 2023; it was made in two sessions, with the second probably delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and when she recorded the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, she was just 19. It is an impressive debut indeed. D'Melon has the technical chops throughout, but at times, she goes beyond those into real star territory. Sample the finale of the Tchaikovsky, where she inserts tempo rubato in unpredictable places and has the listener in absolute thrall. Her slow movement in the Tchaikovsky concerto is understated and deeply lyrical. Despite her Latin heritage (she is of Jamaican-Cuban background), D'Melon is perhaps a bit less persuasive in Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole, a concerto despite its name; however, she is powerful in the opening movement and ahead of every step in the mercurial finale. Conductor Jaime Martin, leading the RTE National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, keeps up with this young firebrand, who is absolutely a player to watch. Rubicon Classics provides fine sound from the National Concert Hall in Dublin, placing D'Melon front and center where she belongs. ~ James Manheim
