Description: This book unwraps the myriad roles a nurse educator can fill and discusses the history of nursing education including its current status and projections for the future. From constructing, implementing, and evaluating curriculum, down to evaluation of the individual or entire programs — this book has it all! The previous edition was published in 2015.
Purpose: The purpose is to offer a singular resource that can be used for almost any situation nursing faculty may encounter. The authors achieve this ambitious aim with thoughtful and inclusive reflection, extensive support by current evidence, and practical examples for real-life application.
Audience: The intended audience is anyone who teaches in the nursing profession. The book is most appropriate for those in academia, but it would also be beneficial for anyone who hopes to become a certified nurse educator. The authors' and contributor's expertise and realistic understanding of the demands on nursing faculty is evident in the quality of the book.
Features: The first of the book's five units addresses the faculty role and how to support the diverse needs of students. The second unit covers curriculum development, from the philosophical foundation to practical implementation. Unit three is on teaching and learning, general enough to cover pedagogy and specific enough to include tips, advantages, disadvantages, and evidence for what appears to be every teaching strategy available. Unit four covers the use of technology, while unit five is a thorough review of the evaluation process from creating an exam to the accreditation process. Case studies, reflection questions, and extensive evidence supplement the many charts, diagrams, and real-life examples throughout the book.
Assessment: This book brings new meaning to the term comprehensive. Preceptors or adjunct faculty can use it to improve their daily encounters with students; new faculty can use it to anticipate and achieve the many expectations they will encounter; experienced faculty can use it to continue to adapt their style to maintain the highest level of quality. The sheer amount of content could easily be overwhelming, but excellent organization and formatting keep the information accessible. This book is a must for anyone who teaches in the nursing profession!
