The book explores how kidney disease care is being changed by new technologies, from inception and diagnosis to dialysis and kidney transplant. Massive technological advances have affected health care in the past decade, and doctors are moving quickly to change the way we provide care for kidney diseases. We are rapidly shifting from hospital- and clinic-based systems to providing care at home, with technologies that help monitor care and intervene remotely. Some of the technologies covered include genetic testing for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, metabolism/ezposome assessment, AI-driven tool for drug dosing, and apps available to patients. This book aims to educate providers on the many new scientific and technological interventions that can help monitor and mitigate kidney disease.

Description: This book is a collection of reviews of some of the most rapidly changing areas in nephrology. The content is divided into 19 chapters. The topics and authors chosen for this book grew out of an ongoing conference at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate, covering the latest advances in kidney care.
Purpose: The goal of this book is to serve as "a memoir of the achievement and work being done in kidney disease." The preface describes both a call to action for further improvement in the treatment of kidney disease and a celebration of the innovations that have led to breakthroughs in widespread dialysis delivery and kidney transplantation.
Audience: While the book is widely relevant to patients and practitioners, the majority of the chapters explore detailed areas of either technology development or basic research. Therefore, the book will best serve practitioners deeply familiar with the standard of care in nephrology and those interested in condensing the latest research to improve their own practice. The authors are affiliated with SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
Features: The book contains 19 chapters that explore the latest developments in an area of nephrology and outline potential new areas for investigation. They cover a wide breadth of topics, from basic science research in genomics to mechanical innovations in the delivery of peritoneal dialysis. Notably, the chapters covering procedural and ultrasound-related developments contain excellent, helpful graphics. While the material is compelling, the book itself is rather disappointing in some areas. One shortcoming is the haphazard organization of chapters, with little continuity between topics (e.g., Chapters 2 and 18 are dedicated to potential applications for machine learning). While the book does an excellent job of condensing complex topics into manageable chapter lengths, the prose is not always easy to follow.
Assessment: This book admirably compiles a great deal of information on updates and potential areas for innovation in the field of nephrology. With its broad range of topics and keen focus on new developments, this volume serves as an excellent encapsulation of changing trends in the management of kidney disease. Hopefully, the authors will spearhead further updated versions of the book as nephrology continues to advance.
