Capstone Press is known for publishing quality nonfiction books for classrooms and school libraries, but any animal lover will enjoy reading the books reviewed in this post. . . .They all contain gorgeous, vivid photographs and graphics and are written in a conversational tone suitable to their intended readership.

Gr 2–3—Visually compelling but cursory in content, these volumes cover the ever-popular topic of animal claws, teeth, armor, offensive capabilities, and defensive adaptations. Though students might be left with more questions than answers after reading statements such as, "The [Fieldfare] thrush's poop can damage another bird's feathers so badly that it dies," the many "Fierce Fact" text boxes in each title will give them bite-size facts to contemplate. The close-up color photos on each spread are well chosen to show the described physical features or behavior and are rarely violent or disturbing.
