About the Author

Marcalee Alexander, MD is a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. A graduate of Jefferson Medical College, she is a Past-President of the American SCI Association. In 2019, to motivate rehabilitation professionals and persons with disabilities to take action regarding climate change, she began a walk from Canada to Key West to educate people about disasters, disability and climate change and the need for an accessible, health-promoting environment. In 2020, she paused the walk due to Covid19. Concomitantly, she founded the 501C3 Sustain Our Abilities, whose mission is to educate people about climate change, disability and health. Dr. Alexander also is founding Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Climate Change and Health and is organizing Climate and Health 2023, a hybrid international meeting. Her walk, now named the Graham-Green Route Aiding Health Adaptation will resume 2/24/24 and she has created a Healthy Living Space petition as part of this journey.

Description: This is a timely book describing the rationale, organization, applications, and implementation of telemedicine to rehabilitation and the care of people with disabilities. A preliminary chapter describing telerehabilitation mechanisms and organization is followed by individual chapters on the application of telerehabilitation to people with various disabling conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, and burns injures, and cross-cutting problems such as pressure ulcers, pain, and speech disorders. The web-based resources are effective.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to define telerehabilitation and to describe its applications to various disabling conditions. These are timely and appropriate objectives.
Audience: This book may be found useful by practicing rehabilitation professionals who are considering implementing a telerehabilitation program. The editor is a well-known physician in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and she has recruited a highly reputable and capable group of authors to write the individual chapters.
Features: The first chapter provides an overview and definition of telerehabilitation, focusing especially on organization and methods of implementation of a telerehabilitation program by healthcare leaders. Subsequent chapters provide descriptions of individual medical conditions that are seen commonly by rehabilitation professionals, together with telerehabilitation methods that have been or could be used to address these problems. Much of the emphasis of each chapter is on the use of telerehabilitation for patient assessment for each condition, with some additional focus on treatment. How to deal with practical issues such as helping patients find proper camera angles and details of how to conduct gait assessments are vexing problems in the use of video telehealth assessments, but are not addressed fully by this text. Additionally, recent significant advances in technologies, especially the use of robotics to realize the full potential of telerehabilitation, is not reviewed in substantial detail. However, despite these shortcomings, the book provides a strong overview of the potential uses of this approach to rehabilitation, which is valuable for beginners.
