Overview

The ten large and imaginative etchings pictured and documented in this catalog were created by Elisabeth Stevens from 1989 to 2006 on 22x28-inch zinc plates and 31-inch diameter copper rondos. All were hand printed in small editions. They often picture energetic nudes influenced by figures from Classical Greek vases such as the sensual MA on the catalog's color cover. Other works involve dream memories such as: When I Was Three, I Flew Across the Front Parlor Over Their Heads or ironic commentaries such as the Death of Santa Claus. Three strange, metaphorical rondos depict Chaos, Metamorphosis, and finally, Apotheosis. Always, these are highly original works in which imagination runs rampant.

About the Author

Born in Rome, NY, artist-writer Elisabeth Stevens now lives and works in Sarasota, Fl. After graduating from Wellesley College and earning an M.A with High Honors from Cloumbia University, she served as art critic for four major newspapers: The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Trenton Times and The Baltimore Sun and written about art for many magazines. She has also written and illustrated six books of fiction and four books of poetry, many of which are now being distributed by Syracuse University Press. Her art works have been shown in many U.S, art galleries and museums. Today, she does linocuts and silverpoints, but continues to choose etching as her favorite medium. As she puts it: I am an illustrator of fleeting impressions, fiction and imagination. I often choose etching as a medium because of its surprises. As with a poem or a story, one can never be sure how an etching will turn out.
