In the distant Alpha Centauri system, there is a planet called Altari. An advanced race, having destroyed their home long ago, have colonized on this planet and attempted to live alongside the indigenous species, the Altarians. Many issues arose from the arrival of the planetary squatters, which the native Altarians dubbed the Salvati. After many hundreds of years, there developed a rift between those who would choose to live alongside, and even interbreed with the Salvati, and those who saw them only as the equivalent of a parasitic disease. The latter group had made a practice of capturing and enslaving the Salvati race and their Salvatari hybrids.
The enslavement and debasement of the entire Salvati race and their descendants caused a war between the two opposing sides which lasted for 49 years. In the aftermath, many Salvati and Salvatari were saved from the clutches of the Altari and collected in communities of their own creation, far from their Altari oppressors. Still, they were at risk of being captured and sold to the outlying Altari districts if they strayed too far from their protected zones. To protect them further, there arose the Altari Rebellion. These rebels were mostly Salvati and Salvatari, though there were a handful of pure-blooded Altari, fighting for the rights of those they felt their ancestors had wronged.
Though it has been nearly 100 years since the 49-year War, the Altari Rebellion is stronger than ever, constantly fighting back against the rising threat of the 'manepere', or 'pure-blooded' Altarians. Many missions have been carried out over the years, most with successful endings; but the fight is still ongoing.
Upon receiving disturbing news of mass Salvati and Salvatari kidnappings, a high-ranking married couple- manepere Altarians who are fighting for the Rebellion- is assigned to investigate the incidents. They leave behind their grown daughter, Teri. Having been kept in the dark about the extent of her parents' involvement in the Rebellion, Teri was unprepared for the events which were about to happen. With her mother and father having been gone for almost a year, and their communications dropping off after only a few months, Teri steels herself to embark on a journey which will unravel the very fabric of her reality. Inexperienced though she is, her fiery spirit and steely resolve have endowed her with an unshakable determination. She will find out what happened to her parents if she has to search until her dying breath.
