Description: This fourth edition of a book on human histology uses color photomicrographs and illustrations to present a complete overview of the microscopic structure of the human body. The accompanying website offers an online version of the print book and permits note taking. The third edition was published in 2007.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a complete and up-to-date overview of human microscopic anatomy for students. The author points out that while histology has become central to other areas of study like cell and molecular biology, physiology, and histopathology, the intent for this edition was to maintain the brevity and readability of previous editions. This edition continues the fine work of the previous editions.
Audience: This is one of the standard textbooks on histology used throughout the U.S. and the world and is intended for any students who require this information. Students of medicine, dentistry, allied health, and many other biomedical fields would be well served by this book.
Features: It covers the entire microscopic anatomy of the human body in detail. It achieves a nice balance between photomicrographs and illustrations to present the material completely and concisely. Readers are neither overburdened by too much text nor too many figures. Figure legends are kept to a minimum. Clinical correlations boxes help readers understand the importance and application of the material to understanding disease. Each chapter concludes with pathology images that cover common diseases.
Assessment: This is a high quality book that would serve any graduate biomedical students well. The quality of the text and images compares well to the handful of other books on human histology. Although there are one or two other similar books, what makes this one stand out is the balance between text and images. It is complete without becoming too overly detailed. After nine years, it was time for new edition.
