Description: Outstanding authors provide a detailed look at the anatomy, physiology, and, importantly, the treatment of patients with neurogenic bladder in this update of a 2011 book. This edition includes access to an ebook version.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide assistance for the treatment of patients with neurogenic bladder, a subject rarely taught in medical school and usually not thoroughly addressed in residency. Given the number of patients with this condition, and the complexity of the resulting pathophysiology and treatment challenges, this is certainly a worthy effort. This book provides enough detail to help these efforts.
Audience: Although this is written for practitioners, including physicians, nurses, and technicians, it will also be helpful to those pursuing research in the field, as a comprehensive overview with which to start one's investigation. The editors and authors assembled are certainly authorities in their field.
Features: The book is divided into sections that address lower urinary tract anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology in neurogenic conditions, and evaluation and treatment. The neurophysiology is very well presented and includes a cohesive description of neurogenic function in storage and emptying. An area that is often overlooked, evaluation, is presented in detail found in few other places. The amount of detail is commendable, but by dividing chapters into more narrow areas of focus, it is easier to digest this sometimes complex material. Chapters also deal with sexual function in neurological disorders and pregnancy in spinal cord injury patients.
Assessment: The detail this book provides is impressive and the organization makes it easy to use. I know of no other book that offers the in-depth exploration of this subject that this one does, nor will be as good as a resource for clinical care. The advances in research into the neurophysiology of the lower urinary tract, including the function of the bladder, spinal cord, and brain, justify this new edition.
