The 5th Voyage of Sinbad the Sailor
At sea again, Sinbad and his crew are passing an island when they spot a gigantic egg that Sinbad recognizes as belonging to a roc. They disembark to view the egg, only to end up breaking it and having the chick inside as a meal before boarding the ship again.

The infuriated parent rocs race after the vessel and bombard it with giant boulders they have carry in their talons. Shipwrecked yet again, Sinbad is enslaved by the Old Man of the Sea, who rides on his shoulders with his legs twisted round Sinbad's neck and will not let go, riding him both day and night until Sinbad would welcome death.

The witty Sinbad, as usual, has a plan. The plan works, and Sinbad escapes briefly, only to fall into the hads of man-eating apes. Sinbad not only avoids being eaten by the apes but manages to use them to help recoup his fortune before he eventually finds a ship that takes him home.

About the Author

The oldest texts of the Sinbad stories are in Arabic, but this English version of Sinbad’s First Journey comes from Sir Richard Burton’s 1885 translation of Arabian Nights, and is assumed by the translator to be one of the tales Scheherazade told night after night in order to save her life from a homicidal king.

Arab scholars today often leave out the stories of Sinbad, believing they originated earler than the Arabian Night’s tales.
