International scholars of history, philosophy, literature, and art history reconsider the ideas and impact of one of the most important figures of the French Revolution and a contributor to the campaigns for Jewish emancipation, rights for blacks, the reform of the Catholic Church, and many other causes. Demonstrating the difficulty of subsuming him under any simple label, the nine essays describe how he was shaped by theological and other traditions with deep roots in his past, how the conclusions he drew from his religious convictions often closely matched those of his secular contemporaries, and how he seems to have given little thought to why he and his fellow Catholic were so often at odds.
