Description: This book offers a timely appraisal of the basic science of adrenergic receptor function, as well as the role these receptors play in physiological and pathophysiological settings.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive overview of adrenergic receptor function. This is a worthy objective as our understanding of adrenergic function has advanced considerably over the past 15 years. In particular, this book focuses on modern genetic approaches to study structure-function relationships and the possible signaling pathways that may be regulated by adrenergic receptors. Overall, the book meets the editor's goal.
Audience: This book is appropriate for laboratories conducting basic or clinical adrenergic receptor research. The editor and contributors are credible authorities in different aspects of adrenergic function.
Features: The editor offers an excellent survey of the adrenergic system. Part I of the book offers historical perspectives beginning from the start of 20th century, when epinephrine and norepinephrine had not been isolated, all the way to the end of the century when knockout mice for each adrenergic receptor subtype were available. Part II covers basic science and clinical aspects of adrenergic structure-function relationships. Parts III and IV discuss how state-of-the-art imaging techniques and genetically altered mouse models have helped elucidate the molecular and cellular basis of subtype-specific receptor function. Part V addresses the physiological and clinical implications associated with pharmacogenomic studies of adrenergic function, and Part VI offers a future perspective of adrenergic research and its clinical application. An obvious strength of the book is the breadth of topics covered. Further, the index is inclusive and thus is useful in locating particular topics of interest.
Assessment: This book is well conceived and well presented. The editor has done an excellent job gathering experts from different areas of adrenergic research. Each chapter is nicely illustrated, well referenced, and of appropriate length. The index is complete, which makes navigation of the text easy. This is an outstanding all-around book that is appropriate for researchers or clinicians with an interest in adrenergic function.
