Description: The latest medical and surgical treatments for different types of alopecia are discussed in detail in this book. Readers will learn how to estimate how many follicular unit hair transplants are necessary for a patient and the preparations and aftercare involved. Platelet rich plasma and stem cell injections combined with microneedling of the scalp or hair grafts show impressive results. There are helpful tables with treatment algorithms for various alopecias.
Purpose: The purpose is to discuss the etiology and basic science/immunology contributing to different alopecias and how to choose proper treatment based on current data/research.
Audience: The audience is everyone, according to the authors: students, dermatologists, internists, hair transplant surgeons, endocrinologists, pediatricians, obstetricians, gynecologists, laboratory workers, and employees of pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies. Readers will have to have advanced knowledge of dermatology to understand the concepts. This is not a beginner's alopecia book.
Features: The authors are experienced in a range of surgical and medical techniques for treating alopecia. There are specific chapters devoted to African American and Asian hair needs. The chapter on hair products is interesting, but too brief. The microscopic photographs and explanation of hair shaft abnormalities are presented well. The discussion of hair biology is excellent.
Assessment: While reading this book, I realized that some of it was verbatim from another book. It turns out that one of the contributing authors, Ralph Trueb, has also written a book on alopecia, The Difficult Hair Loss Patient: Guide to Successful Management of Alopecia and Related Conditions (Springer, 2015), He wrote a chapter on the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in men and women. His book is superb. Every dermatologist who treats alopecia will feel more confident in diagnosing and treating these challenging patients after reading Dr. Trueb's book. He has great clinical insights into alopecia and excellent explanations on how to incorporate and interpret trichoscopy into the evaluation.
