Description: This book reviews each of the anxiety disorders in detail.
Purpose: According to the authors, the purpose is to spark further interest in a group of disorders previously under- recognized and inadequately treated. This is accomplished by systematically reviewing each specific anxiety disorder with respect to etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment. While these objectives are quite thoroughly met, it is questionable whether such a book is needed, given the enormous redundancy of this topic in any one of the many comprehensive textbooks of psychiatry currently available.
Audience: According to the authors, both well-respected anxiety researchers, the book is targeted toward all levels of psychiatrist, as well as mental health professionals and primary care physicians. While the book is quite thorough in its review, it is likely very remedial for those psychiatrists who regularly treat anxiety disorders. It seems better suited for psychiatry residents and non-psychiatric clinicians unfamiliar with the anxiety literature.
Features: The book systematically reviews the DSM-IV anxiety disorders, devoting one chapter to each. It is very well organized, and includes sections on etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment - both medical and non-medical. It nicely includes diagnostic criteria tables for each DSM-IV anxiety disorder, as well as other supporting data and illustrations. The table of contents is quite sparse due to the limited number of chapters, but the index appears more than adequate and quite helpful. The cover is plain and rather unappealing.
Assessment: This is a useful resource to the clinician generally unfamiliar with current literature on anxiety disorders who need a concise, clinically-oriented reference. However, for those clinicians thoroughly up to date on the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders, this review offers nothing new. In fact, given the rather steep price, one might do better to spend a little more and purchase one of the recently updated comprehensive textbooks of psychiatry, which are almost as complete in this area and cover the whole spectrum of psychiatric medicine as well.
