THE BABY CHASE: A Confessional Novel
THE BABY CHASE: A Confessional Novel is about infertility--and the insane lengths some people go to in pursuing their dream of becoming a "real" American family.

L.A.-based thirty-somethings Thaisa and Ira Jordan have been married only a few years when they discover they cannot have children--at least not the way they expected. They go through numerous exasperating medical interventions until they consult a famous expert (and sperm-bank entrepreneur), who sends them to Tijuana for an experimental sperm-generating drug. There, they stare at a little Mexican girl who's begging on a street corner and, distraught from hopelessness, and seeing no parent or guardian in sight, conspire to put her in the car. Crossing the border is surprisingly easy, but as the days and weeks pass and they try to pass her off as a niece, or a daughter by adoption, they're haunted by mounting guilt and the ever-closer INS. They flee their home and attempt to start a new life until they're forced to face the enormity of their sins and attempt some form of restitution.

About the Author

BEN MATTLIN is an NPR commentator and a frequent contributor to INSTITUTIONAL INVESTOR and FINANCIAL ADVISOR magazines, among others.

He's written for SELF magazine, USA TODAY, the LOS ANGELES TIMES, the CHICAGO TRIBUNE, and WashingtonPost.com, and is a former contributing editor at the late WINDOWS IN FINANCIAL SERVICES, DEALMAKER, BUYSIDE, and INDIVIDUAL INVESTOR magazines.

Non-print credits include the Mark Taper Forum, Blonde and Brunette Productions, and the children's television program BIKER MICE FROM MARS.

He has a nice butt, too, but you'll never see it because he's always sitting in a wheelchair.

Born in New York City in 1962 with spinal muscular atrophy, a congenital muscle weakness, Mattlin graduated cum laude from Harvard University in 1984.

His writing about disability-related causes led to appearances on ABC's PRIME TIME LIVE, CNN, and E! Entertainment Network, and radio interviews on KKFI and KPFK, Los Angeles, and KSLC, Salt Lake City. He's also been quoted in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT, and PENTHOUSE.

Mattlin is currently at work on a memoir, to be published next year by TitleTown Publishing. He blogs at www.benmattlin.blogspot.com (please follow!) and occasionally Twitters.

He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, their two daughters, a cat and a turtle.
