Leigh Hodgkinson is the author and illustrator of Troll Swap and Goldilocks and Just One Bear, as well as the illustrator of the Magical Mix-Ups series. She is also an award-winning animator who is passionate about daydreaming. Leigh Hodgkinson lives and works in Surrey, England, with her family.

Snoozing monsters, their eyes closed and ribbons of zzzzs trailing from their mouths, lounge across the pages of this quirky book. Wearing bulbous headphones and carrying a recorder and microphone, a tiny green monster tiptoes around, introducing each behemoth and recording their nighttime noises. "Tony's toes tippy-tap while he dreams," says the little creature, who is about as big as one of those toes. Fiona, who has five long and tangled legs, "flips and flops until she's all in knots." Only when the grinning beasts awaken and "look for some little monsters to eat" does the visitor's stealthy behavior start to make sense. He turns his audio equipment to maximum volume, broadcasting their scary snores. They tumble away—their anxious poses recalling Sendak's wild things—and leave the small one snug in his underground home. Working in digital media, Hodgkinson (Troll Swap) creates patchwork, multicolored monsters, textured with stubble, scribbles, and dots. They aren't too scary, though imaginative readers may still be glad they are asleep at first. Despite all the snoozing and snoring, it's less a bedtime story than one of a sneaky, well-executed plan. The little monster then leads readers through the book to see all the enormous "snorey" monsters snoozing therein. Taking sound samples along the way, the little monster points out a giant, noisy monster sleeping over the expanse of each spread—snorers, knee-knockers, sleep talkers, fidgeters, belly-grumblers, and toe-tappers ("This is TONY. Tony's toes tippy-tap while he dreams. Those terribly tatty toenails make a lot of noise."). At the end of the tour, readers may start to wonder about the little monster's plan and why he is digging a hole with a spoon. When an alarm goes off and the big monsters wake up hungry and want a little monster to eat, everything becomes clear. Hodgkinson uses digital art in a variety of colors, sizes, and designs to create energy within the pages, and the little monster draws readers in closer by engaging with them directly. Large monsters are hungry for little monsters when they wake from their snoozes…but one little monster has a clever plan to scare them off.Big, winding ribbons of ZZZZZZZs and alliterative foolery take center stage here as, armed with a microphone and recording device, a diminutive green fuzzball creeps past a series of much larger sleeping monsters. "First is Norris. He has a monster cold. While he sleeps, his tiny toothypegs chitter and chatter and his knobbly knees knock."
