This is a second edition of a book by a child psychiatrist and a pediatric neurologist. It offers a comprehensive overview of the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of the autistic syndromes, emphasizing the complexity and heterogeneity of this spectrum of disorders. This book offers a very readable overview, covering all aspects of the biology of autism. It provides both a historical overview of the disorders and an update on current research and clinical treatment. This book would be appropriate for the practicing child psychiatrist, child neurologist, or developmental psychologist, even one with considerable experience with autism. It is also written so clearly that the parent of an autistic child might benefit from reading parts of the book. This book contains numerous black-and-white photographs of children with autism. Some of the photos are merely interesting and pleasant to look at, whereas others are more specifically instructive and illustrative of specific syndromes or chromosomal abnormalities associated with autism. In either case, they are a nice contribution to the book. The tables that address diagnostic criteria or differential diagnosis are especially helpful, clear, and complete. This is a very complete, well-written overview that presents a balanced discussion of a heterogeneous neuropsychiatric disorder. It would be of interest to both the beginner and the seasoned practitioner. It includes both classic and up-to-date references and presents an excellent overview of the state of knowledge in the field of autism.
