Overview

In this tale we experience first-hand the gradual deterioration of the narrator, as he moves from total innocence and love of humanity and animals, to hatred and ultimately to madness which leads him to cruelty and homicide.
Despite the terse prose that Poe employed in this story, some obscure terms and archaic usages slow down the tempo of the suspenseful story. At times it can try even the most passionate and patient reader.
Yet, Poe like Shakespeare and Chaucer deserve to be read for

Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) throughout his writing career was interested in horror themes such as claustrophobia, fear of being buried alive, incest, mental disorders, and in doubles.
This theme of live-internment plays an important role in Poe’s horror story “The Black Cat,” except that what was buried alive was not a person—but a cat!
Not only was Poe a poet, novelist, short story writer, critic, and journalist--he was also an actor. His biography is as varied and colorful as is his fiction.
