About the Author

Joseph T. Wilson (1836-1891) was an American Civil War veteran, writer, and historian. Wilson served in the 2nd Regiment Louisiana Native Guard Volunteers, and later in the famed 54th Massachusetts Volunteers (the first army unit composed of Free Blacks); he received several wounds in combat. Wilson was the first African-American member of the National Council of Administration of the Grand Army of the Republic, and served as a delegate to the National Encampment. He was appointed Colonel aide-de-camp to the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, and chosen by his comrades to write a history of American Black soldiers.
